Alstonville

From Coffs Harbour we drove about 2 and a half hours to Alstonville, approximately 40 minutes South of Byron Bay.  The Showgrounds there had a massive shed which we managed to secure a place under.  Once we had set up Karli and I ducked out to Coles to pick up a few essentials.

That evening the kids played football on the oval with a couple and their puppy next to us. After dinner it was showers and bed.  It was so nice not to be worried about the rain or soggy grass.

The following day we met Margaux and Hugo and their parents Bertrand and Lucie - a beautiful French/Australian family camping next to us.  Margaux and Brenton were very similar characters and got along very well! We enjoyed their company very much!

We spent the morning checking out Byron Bay beaches.  The sun came out and made it a very warm day! At the first beach the kids were happy just to throw jellyfish at each other.

We went for a short drive and found another beach, where the kids took the footy and had a blast tackling each other.  They still didn't want to go for a swim though!

They had so much fun!

From there we headed back to Alstonville where we visited the 'House With No Steps' - Summerland Farm. We stopped first at the café where we enjoyed lunch in the outdoor area.  By this time the rain had started so we managed to duck in just in time.

After lunch we walked through the Museum or history of the House With No Steps.  The House was founded by Lionel Watts, who was struck with polio when he was 28, making him a paraplegic. Once he had recovered, he attempted to re-enter the workforce and into society but found he couldn't. So he began working on a rehabilitation centre for people like himself, which then evolved to creating a centre where people with a physical or mental disability could go to work and have job satisfaction.  It is an amazing place. http://www.hwns.com.au/

Now operating at this site (Summerland House) is a fully operating avocado and macadamia farm.  The café is run and operated by staff who have disabilities.  There is also a gourmet shop with fresh produce, as well as a gift shop.  If it wasn't raining the kids would've enjoyed the water park.  Instead they played a game of mini golf.  There was some pretty cool contraptions on some of the holes.

On this hole, the ball would go up the ramp (under the chook) then roll out
another ramp - as if the chook had laid an egg!

On the last hole, the ball had to go up a ramp then it would be collected by a conveyor belt and taken up then dropped near the hole. The thrill was being able to push the button for the conveyor to start.

After buying some fresh vegies we left the Farm and headed back to our camper to do some schoolwork.
And the kids were so happy about it!
