Rockhampton to Mackay

From Maryborough we packed up and drove through to Rockhampton, a 4 hour drive.  As we drove through Rockhampton, we came to the flooded river, the lower bridge was flooded so the higher bridge had been changed to a two-way road, allowing us to go cross over.

About 15 minutes later we came to our camp site, on the side of the highway.  We walked down to the 'river' and met some people who lived on the other side and had been commuting to their house on their dinghy. They explained to us that there is usually a road there and the 'river' that we were looking at is usually not a river but dry land - and the water had come from the river overflow.  The local shire had been marking the high water mark and it just kept rising.

After sussing out the water and allowing the kids to get WAAAYYY too close to the waters edge, the locals told us that there'd definitely be crocodiles in the water so we promptly left and went back to the caravan to do some school work.

We met some people (Chris & Pam) here who we'd met at a previous 'Driver Reviver' and we chatted to them for a while, they taught us a few things about the caravan! After 4 months we're still learning!

We had our dinner - fought the urge to duck into the pub for a meal - and got the kids to bed. Mars kept chatting with Chris and Pam and enjoyed the comfort of their deluxe caravan!

The next day we packed up and continued driving, making our way to Mackay. We arrived there just before lunch and headed to the Water Park there.  Again, this park was free - however, this was really impressive - with 3 pools, slides and the water play area with smaller slides and a dumping water bucket (a common thing in the Water Parks here).  The older kids loved the slides, we took Rowan and Axel to the smaller slides and they loved them!

After some hot chips for lunch with the kids, I ducked over to the shopping centre with Axel for a quick bit of shopping and to pick up some groceries. Axel needed a sleep so we strapped him into the pram and he had a sleep while I did some shopping. But it's always hurried and I always end up walking back to the car looking like a pack horse.

When we managed to convince the kids that they'd had long enough to play - probably 3 hours - we headed back to the car and drove to our camp for the night - located at a BP Service Centre. There were showers available but we chose to set up our toilet and shower so it's easier to shower the kids consecutively.

The kids found some old coconuts they could use for soccer balls, then proceeded to make a mess smashing them up. All part of learning...
