After a bit of fishing and enjoying the sunshine we packed up from the caravan park and headed out through Hobart onto Mount Field National Park.
We arrived after lunch and found the last powered site there and quickly parked up. After speaking to some other campers they advised us that the walks were quite good to the Waterfalls so we headed off at 2:30 to see Russell Falls. It was quite a warm day but it was amazing to feel the temperature drop as we went into the forest.
We stopped at Russell Falls then walked onto Horseshoe Falls. On the way I got them to start learning some of the trees - by the name signs at the base of the tree. When that became too easy I asked them to remember what leaf it had so they could recognise it later on the walk. We learnt; the Tree Fern, the Myrtle, the Horizontal Tree and the Sassofras (that was our Science lesson).
From Horseshoe Falls we went on through the Tall Trees Walk - which took us through very tall and enormous Eucalyptus Trees. We stopped at a Clinometer - a gadget designed to determine the height of trees, based on the angle and distance away from the tree. We stopped at a tree stump of a fallen down tree - as well as a hole which a fallen tree left (which tore out roots and all) - it made a great playpen! They are enormous!!!
Still smiling!
We made our way to Lady Barron Falls then stopped for a sugar fix drink of Sprite. It made me laugh when the kids had a drink then commented, 'can't finish it, it's too sweet'! Our diets have changed slightly on the trip with less sugary drinks / more water - juice boxes are a rare treat. The Sprite was the only sweet drink left in the van!
Not smiling anymore...
From Lady Barron Falls it was approx. 45 minute walk back to our camp which seemed quite do-able. Until we reached the 239 steps... Wow - after 3 hours of walking it was tough! But we all managed and eventually reached our caravan again at 6:30pm!
Happy to see our camp again!!
Chad and Brenton went to do some river fishing while I made dinner. Rowan found a friend nearby to play with. After dinner and showers we went for ANOTHER walk out to Russell Falls (about 9:30pm) to see the Glow Worms. We walked with our Dutch camping neighbour out into the forest. The kids didn't realise that you had to stand IN THE DARK (torches off) in the middle of the forest to be able to see the glow worms! The novelty quickly wore off!
The walk back to camp was entertaining with lots of possums and paddy melon wallabies to be seen!
