Granite Island

We let the kids enjoy the bikes for a while as those campers were leaving later in the day. Mars chatted to some of the other campers for some tips on where to go / what to see as we head into Victoria.

The kids said their goodbyes to their little friends and then we drove into Victor Harbor, checking out some of the view points on the way. The coastline has a number of rocky headlands and is well known for the many shipwrecks.

 Horseshoe Bay

We walked along the jetty out to Granite Island. There was also the option to take the horse-drawn tram but it wasn't a long walk over so we just watched the horse and it's passengers go past us on the jetty. The horses add character to the jetty.

Originally, the jetty was built to bring income to the Island which hosts colonies of fairy penguins. However, with the number of people going over and interfering with the natural habitat of the penguins, the penguins numbers have deteriorated. Consequently now, it's more of a tourist attraction than a penguin-sighting trip.

The coastline is very scenic and the natural granite colour against the blue of the ocean is quite stunning.

The walk took us about an hour. We stopped for a quick drink before we headed back over the jetty.

From there we went back to our campsite, packed up and then drove out to our next stop.  On the way we had to fill up with water so we quickly cooked up and ate dinner on the side of the road and then headed to the river where we took the free ferry across the Murray River.  We remained in the car as it only took about a minute. Not sure if Axel realised what was going on or not but he screamed the whole time. Hopefully that's not an indication of how he deals with being on the water!! (Spirit of Tasmania could be a LONG 10 hours!

We found a nice rest stop just down the road from Tailem Bend and stayed there the night.
