Heading out of Mount Gambier

We woke to a dreary morning - it was still raining.  While Mars packed up in the rain, I went with Karli to do a grocery shop.  Chad and Brenton were still enjoying watching the horses at the racecourse.

After a quick pack away of the shopping we headed into the centre of Mount Gambier to watch a movie (always love a freebie!) about the Volcanoes of Australia.  Mars and I continue to learn with the kids - can't say we even knew Australia had volcanoes!  The movie started with the aboriginal stories of how the volcanoes came to be which always makes an interesting conversation for later!  It followed with a lot of facts about the volcanoes and when they last erupted (guessing?).

We then headed to the Visitor Centre where they had a walk through museum and interactive displays.  A hologram video of a nun named Christina Smith was particularly interesting.  Lots of information about the local area and its history.

From there we headed out of Mount Gambier to the Tantanoola Caves. It is apparently the 'prettiest' of caves comparable to Jewel Cave in Margaret River - it has LOTS of Stalactites to see and be amazed by! It is only one large 'room' which made it a relatively 'easy' tour. Rowan is still not a fan of being underground and didn't really enjoy the experience.  The guide was enthusiastic and kept the kids engaged which was great!

We left the caves and headed East until we crossed into Victoria (and added another half hour to our clock) and camped in a border town called Apsley.
